Ryan Keeley and Brentt Brown have made music together since Bucknell University where they were randomly chosen to be roommates. Pirate Radio formed in San Francisco after both left college with Brian Stein at the drum kit. Losing Stein to a Masters degree in financial mathematics, an opening was made for Oren Williams just as Baby Carrot was ending its 13 year San Francisco run. After recording guitars for 'Welcome Home', Ian Shaul was asked to be a full time member with hope he'd take some time away from his incredible solo recordings and efforts. Check out Ian's spectacular solo material at IanShaulsGotASlackJaw. 2009 saw a brief hiatus due to Brentt Brown's nearly tearing off an arm in a bike accident. During the hiatus, Ian Shaul continued his solo career, Ryan Keeley joined Cola Wars on bass, and Oren Williams joined Rocking Heads to play some Talking Heads songs with Michael Franti at The Fillmore. 2010 has Pirate Radio back with the release of 'Fires in the Woods.' Using the talents of no less than three songwriters and singers, Pirate Radio joins other bands breaking from the lead singer tradition. 'Welcome Home' was a giant step from Pirate Radio's previous stripped-down country garage-rock to a more diverse atmosphere filled with superb songwriting. 'Fires in the Woods', finds the San Francisco staple in a story telling mood. Tales of unrelenting hangovers, mundane commutes, war torn hands, disappearing small towns, and the like all find their right place on the band's third LP. |
